My Two-Year Journey with Insulin Resistance: What I Learned About Health, Happiness, and Success

Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would completely transform how I viewed health and well-being

At the time, I knew my metabolic health was in bad shape, but I didn’t realize just how much my mental and emotional health were tied to it. Today, I want to share my story with you—what I’ve learned along the way, and why this journey is about so much more than a number on the scale.

1. What Insulin Resistance Looks Like

When I started, I had all the telltale signs of insulin resistance. You might be familiar with some of them. I had a fatty hump at the top of my neck, a rounded belly, and some darker skin around my neck and potential skin tags. These are all warning signs of insulin resistance—a condition that leads to higher cortisol levels in your body. This can result in unhealthy fat accumulation, especially in the belly area, and it puts you at risk for serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer.

I knew I needed to address this if I wanted to improve my health, but what I didn’t realize was that fixing my insulin resistance wasn’t just about losing weight—it was about transforming my entire life.

2. The Start of a New Journey

Two years ago, I made the decision to take control of my metabolic health. I realized that my physical health was affecting my mental health in ways I hadn’t fully understood. I was constantly tired, my body ached, and I battled depression daily. I felt like I wasn’t showing up for my life the way I wanted to, and I knew that had to change.

This new journey to health was not like any other I have ever gone on because this time I was going to learn how to build an unshakeable foundation of wellness. I was going to learn how to make healthy and happy my new normal.

3. It’s Not About the Scale

At first, I thought that success would mean seeing the numbers on the scale go down. But two years later, I’ve learned that it was never really about that.

Sometimes the scale didn't more and I felt like I was failing somehow, and when it did get low it triggered my fears fo being "skinny".

The real victory has been in how I feel—both in my body and my mind. My goal shifted from "How much weight can I lose?" to "How can I feel happier and healthier every day?"

4. My Mental Health Transformation

5. The Battle with Self-Sabotage

Like many of us, I’ve had my fair share of self-sabotage. During this journey, the doubts crept in—"Am I good enough?", "Can I really do this?"—and there were times when I was afraid of losing weight. These limiting beliefs held me back, and I had to work hard to overcome them.

Something I had to learn the hard way was this... self-sabotage doesn't have to sound mean or judgy, she can also sound like a friend, and speak to you with kindness. The takeaway? If it isn't in alignment with your goals, its mostly likely self sabotage.

6. Learning to be Consistent

I also had to learn how to use the tools I had consistently. This was one of the hardest parts for me—being disciplined enough to make daily choices that supported my long-term health goals. It wasn’t always easy, but I knew that showing up for myself every day was the only way to make real, lasting progress.

7. Removing External Markers of Success

Eventually, I stopped using the scale as a measure of success. I stopped worrying about how much I weighed or whether I looked a certain way. Instead, I started asking myself, "Am I feeling happier? Am I feeling healthier?" Those were the real indicators of success for me.

We think that it is about how much we way or how we look, but that's a big fat lie, my confidence and joy came back long before my body was noticeably "smaller ".

8. The Power of Self-Love and Respect

As I continued on this journey, I realized something incredible: the more I treated my body with love and respect, the more I started to love and respect myself. I learned to appreciate my body for all it does for me, and I began to feel a deep sense of self-worth that I hadn’t felt before.

9. The Biggest Takeaway

So, what’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned over the past two years? It’s that the goal is never to be skinny. It’s to be happy and healthy. Every day, I remind myself that I deserve to feel good—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And I’m still on this journey. Every day I get curious about how much happier and healthier I can become, and I encourage you to do the same.
